Stockport Council has recently announced the winners of the Conservation & Design Awards 2009 and the refurbishment of Stockport Covered Grade II market was one of them. The judges visited the shortlisted schemes looking for an outstanding response to context and contribution to the street scene, innovative design and detailing and excellent materials, finishes and workmanship.

The grade II Stockport Covered Market received a grant of just under 拢1 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Council allocated 拢720,000 to fund the project. The project repaired the historic elements of the Victorian structure and refurbished the interior for modern day trading in order to breathe new life into a landmark building in Stockport鈥檚 historic townscape.

The Hall was officially opened on 28th November 2008 by The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Pam King. Cllr Kevin Hogg, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: 鈥淲e received a very high number of entries this year all of which were of a high standard and goes to show that Stockport is a leader in successful and innovative regeneration projects. The awards recognise best practice and positively promote conservation and design activity in the borough so I would like to congratulate everyone who was shortlisted for their hard work.鈥�
