Giant crawler crane heading for the UK

Dutch heavylift specialist Mammoet has expanded its crane fleet with two high-capacity Liebherr crawlers.

Mammoet has bought a Liebherr LR12500-1.0 and a Liebherr LR11350 to its global fleet. This is the second LR12500-1.0 purchased by Mammoet.

And the new LR12500-1.0 is scheduled to work on an upcoming project in the UK, Mammoet revealed, although it has yet to disclose the specific project.

The LR12500-1.0 has a maximum rated load capacity of 2,500 tonnes, with a maximum hoist height of 200 metres and a maximum operating reach of 180 metres. Its lifting power comes from an unusually wide main boom.

Liebherr released the LR12500-1.0 to the market in 2022. It is one of the largest crawler cranes it manufactures, beaten only by its bigger the 3,000-tonne capacity LR13000 鈥 Mammoet also has one of these in its fleet.

There are bigger cranes than the LR12500-1.0 in the UK 鈥 the Sarens SGC-250 (Big Carl) working at Hinkley Point C, for example, can lift up to 5,000 tonnes at a radius of 40 metres. But that crane is mounted on a platform and slews on a fixed ring; it is not a crawler crane and so cannot move itself.

The LR12500-1.0 is likely to become the largest crawler crane in the UK (according to latest聽Cranes & Access rankings), easily outlifting the 1,600-tonne capacity Demag CC8800 that Sarens UK has.

Mammoet said that its investment comes on the back of continued growth in the renewables sector, particularly in offshore wind, requiring the use of ever taller and stronger crawler cranes for their integration.

The LR11350 has a maximum load capacity of 1,350 tonnes and a hoist height of 220 metres. It will join 10 other machines that Mammoet has in its fleet with a capacity of between 1,000 to 1,350 tonnes. (UK crane operator Weldex also has an LR11350.)

Peter van Oostrom, global projects and assets director at Mammoet, said: 鈥淭o ensure we continue to have a crane fleet best fitting market requirements and most modern fleet of cranes in the world, it is important that we invest in new machines from leading manufacturers. Liebherr is a worldwide supplier and the logical choice for cranes of this capacity. We therefore see it being in very high demand, particularly for offshore wind projects.鈥
