Walsall鈥檚 waste-to-energy incinerator is being built by Kanadevia Inova for Encyclis to convert up to 436,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into around 49Mwe of electricity a year.
The heavy lifting is being done by a diesel-powered Favelle Favco M2480D luffing tower crane that is owned and operated by Marr Contracting.
The M2480D, made in Malaysia by Muhibbah Engineering, can lift components of up to 330 tonnes at a 15-metre radius, or 100 tonnes to a 45-metre radius with around 130 metres of hook height and no support ties.
The crane in Walsall is configured with a capacity of 100 tonnes and will perform critical lifts including installations of the 78-tonne economiser and a 69-tonne boiler drum. By enabling larger modular components to be lifted directly into position, the solution supports the project鈥檚 design for manufacture and assembly approach (what used to be called prefabrication). This reduces the number of lifts required.
惭补谤谤鈥檚 crane is scheduled to be on site for most of the year.
Marr Contracting managing director Simon Marr said: 鈥淒rawing on our experience delivering similar large-scale energy-from-waste and industrial projects in the UK, Australia and Middle East, we鈥檙e delivering a safer, more efficient lifting approach, which has been tailored to meet the project鈥檚 specific needs.鈥
惭补谤谤鈥檚 first UK project was at Hinkley Point C, supporting Balfour Beatty鈥檚 marine & tunnelling project between 2019 and 2021. It has since worked at Old Oak Common, Hinkley Point C, Lostock waste-to-energy plant (Cheshire) and the North London Heat & Power project.
